112. How To Conquer Your Gut Health, with Registered Dietitian Heather Finley
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Today I chat gut health with registered dietitian, Dr Heather Finley.
Heather, who struggled with her own gut health issues for years, completed her doctorate in clinical nutrition to literally figure out what the doctors couldn’t. After navigating restrictive diets that left her social life in shambles, and food guilt at an all-time high, Heather conquered her gut health issues and now teaches that gut health is about so much more than what you eat.
In today’s episode, Heather and I talk about what good gut health means and what the gut brain connection is. We discuss why our mindset influences our gut health and what we can do from a nutrition perspective to improve our gut health. We also discuss lifestyle factors for gut health, gut triggers, restrictions, how to increase our tolerance to foods and how to reduce gas. Finally, we talk about some gut health myths we want to dispel.
If you would like to learn more about gut health from Heather, follow her on Instagram or visit her website.

My first guest for 2022 is Registered Dietitian, Colleen Christensen who is going to change the way you think about nutrition through her "gentle nutrition" approach.
As a nutritionist and dietitian, Colleen is a food freedom expert who believes that eating should be easy and enjoyable rather than causing guilt, stress or anxiety.
Colleen and I talk about why we should be thinking about nutrition differently and how to adopt a sustainable and realistic approach to nutrition.
We chat about why diets don’t work, what to do instead of dieting and what happens when we stop dieting and start listening to our bodies.
We teach you how to listen better to your bodies and we debunk the myth that food freedom means eating whatever you want.
If you would like to learn more about Colleen and her "gentle nutrition" approach, visit her Instagram or her website.

This episode, I discuss all things coeliac disease and gluten-free diets with special guest, Dr Kim Faulkner-Hogg.
Kim is an advanced accredited practising dietitian with more than 25 years experience with coeliac disease. She completed her PhD in coeliac disease and the gluten-free diets in 2004. She was part of the original working party defining the low gluten and gluten-free food standards in Australia and was a consultant dietitian to Coeliac Australia for a number of years.
This episode, Kim and I discuss what coeliac disease is and how it’s diagnosed. We discuss red flags, risk factors and whether gluten is inflammatory or not for persons who do not have coeliac disease. We then analyse the long term risks of not maintaining a gluten-free diet if you have been diagnosed with coeliac disease and whether you should be worried about accidental gluten ingestion.
We look at the standards for low gluten and gluten-free foods in Australia and the rest of the world.
Finally, we discuss the controversial topic of gluten-free oats, medications for coeliac disease and gluten-free beauty products.
If you would like more information about coeliac disease and gluten-free diets, you can visit Kim's website, GlutenFreeNutrition or her Instagram @Gluten.Free.Dietitian.
